The Benefits of Different Materials for Clips and Fasteners

07/28/2024

In the world of clips and fasteners, it’s always important to keep in mind more than just the type of fastener; you also need to consider the material. Depending on the application you have in mind, it’s also critical to consider the material you plan on using. Whether you need corrosion resistance, lightweight applications, or solutions that will stand the test of time, we at ASF have the fastener materials you need.

Steel and Stainless Steel Fasteners

Steel and stainless steel are some of the most common materials for clips and fasteners—and its not hard to see why. For how simple it is to source and produce, steel has an incredibly high durability and tensile strength. Stainless steel, in particular, comes complete with an anti-corrosion property due to the chromium-oxide film that covers the steel. As a result, stainless steel clips and fasteners can stand the test of time better than any comparable materials.

Aluminum

Like stainless steel, aluminum is similarly corrosion resistant. Aluminum reacts with oxygen to create a thin film of oxide that has a high resistance to corrosion. So, if you want to get technical, aluminum, itself, isn’t corrosion resistant, but it naturally creates corrosion resistant oxide when exposed to oxygen. Though you may not expect it, this actually gives aluminum additional protections that stainless steel doesn’t have. If the outer layer of oxide gets scraped off or chipped, the aluminum below it will form another layer of corrosion-resistant oxide when exposed to the air.

Nylon (Yes, Nylon)

Though some folks outside of the clips and fasteners industry may be surprised, nylon fasteners are surprisingly common and robust. So, why are nylon fasteners so popular? Well, there’s a few reasons:

  1. Fire-Resistant Plastic. Unlike some other materials used for clips and fasteners, nylon doesn’t burn—it melts. As a result, they’re desirable for products that necessitate fire resistance.
  2. They’re Lightweight. A huge upside to nylon clips and fasteners is how lightweight they are. Though steel fasteners are extremely strong, at times they’d weigh more than the product, itself.
  3. They’re Affordable. It’s no secret—nylon is pretty cheap. And because it’s so lightweight, it costs much less to translate.
